The Difference Between Natural Latex Mattresses and Synthetic Latex Mattresses

September 26, 2011

Dormia natural latex mattress, dormia memory foam mattressIn recent years, more and more customers have been purchasing latex mattresses. There are many reasons for consumers to be making the switch over to latex, especially if the mattress is made from all-natural materials. But there are two kinds of latex mattresses on the market: natural and synthetic. It is important for the consumer to have an understanding about the different qualities of these products in order to make the best purchasing decision. Let’s see why most people choose natural latex over synthetic latex mattresses when it comes down to buying.

Natural latex mattresses are the “green” option in the industry. The plant-derived latex usually comes from rubber tree sap, giving the material its natural properties. These mattresses tend to have been manufactured with organic cotton and wool as well, which help people to fall asleep easier due to added comfort. Besides the sustainable qualities, natural latex is also hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and has anti-dust mite properties. Natural latex mattresses are safe for those who are sensitive to chemical substances, and they promote a healthy sleep environment.

Additionally, natural latex enhances a person’s quality of sleep. While its density offers support, the elastic materials offer comfort. Natural latex mattresses conform to a person’s curves and relieve pressure points, especially those in the hips, neck and back.

The organic wool used offers perfect insulation that has the ability to keep you cool during the summer and warm during the winter. Wool also absorbs moisture and humidity, keeping your bed dry and comfortable. The material lanolin that is found in wool prevents dust mites from nesting in the mattress.

The other type of latex mattress on the market is called synthetic latex, which is made with chemical based ingredients. Although mattress companies claim it to be more durable and affordable than natural latex, synthetic latex is not as hypoallergenic. Some manufacturers even use a blend of synthetic and natural materials in order to offer at a lower price. The problem with blended and synthetic mattresses is that they do not have the organic, healthy qualities that all natural latex mattresses have.

The advantages of sleeping on a natural latex mattress are critical when deciding on natural versus synthetic. All of Dormia’s natural latex mattresses are made from the milk sap of the rubber tree. They are hypoallergenic, anti-microbial and naturally dust mite, mold and mildew resistant. For more information on our natural product line, please visit our website.
